TELL GRANDMA AND GRANDPA TOO
Did you and grandpa hear about the new green roof we built? It’s so cool – literally. One of the construction guys had a digital thermometer and took readings before and after the green roof was installed. It was 140 degrees on the old black roof. After the green roof was built the temperature was the same as the air temperature – 80 degrees. How cool is that? It’s fun to watch all the butterflies and bugs that that visit our roof. The flowers provide food for the butterflies and honey bees. We’re going to even try vegetables next year.
When our parents were young only about 15% of the population lived in cities. Now, over 50% of people live in cities. No wonder there is less green space. Roads, parking lots, new homes, apartments, office buildings, and stadiums are being built everyday. When you combine the changing weather patterns and “stalled weather conditions” it’s a recipe for trouble. Sometimes grandma and I watch the rain water flow across the parking lot down the street. So much water – and where can it go. When we repair our roof next year we are going to add a green roof. We’re old, but we can make a little difference too!
